What if a sunken village emerges out of a Lake after 45 years? Climate change impact! Well, that is what has reportedly happened in Greece, one of the cradles of ancient civilisation.
From beneath the shrinking Lake Mornos in central Greece, remains of homes are surfacing after nearly 45 years since the village disappeared underwater due to expanding water cover. Now the water of the lake is drying up and the remains of the sunken village is emerging.
The Lake is a man-made one constructed for water supply to a large chunk of Greece’s population. But many days of little snow, harsh summer and scanty rainfall brought about drought across most regions of Greece, drying up the lake.
A special report of the news agency Reuters quoted Dimitris Giannopoulos, mayor of the broader Dorida municipality: "Day by day, the water goes down,” adding that no such harsh climatic situation had been witnessed in the last 33 years.
Greece’s submerged village emerging after 45 years due to drying up of a lake is a telling example of impact of climate change crisis globally. Elsewhere in countries like India, Bangladesh, Japan, China etc, excessive flood, landslide and rain-related destruction is the immediate impact of climate change.
