Venezuela Opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González has left his country of South America and reached Spain seeking asylum there. The departure of González came after Venezuela government issued arrest warrant against him, accusing him of conspiracy and other criminal charges. He left Venezuela with his wife amid crisis over disputed election result, which many foreign governments including the U.S. and the European Union opine that González is the legitimate winner, while President Nicolas Maduro says he is the winner.
'A sad day for democracy,' said European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement, reported news agency Reuters. "In a democracy, no political leader should be forced to seek asylum in another country."Venezuela had gone into presidential election on July 28 this year and the Opposition in Venezuela maintain that the results had gone in favour of Gonzalez.
Venezuela President Maduro, however, has dismissed all such assertions and said there was a right-wing plot to sabotage his government, according to Reuters.
