A United Nations panel of human rights experts has asked Belarus to release Ales Bialiatski, the Nobel Peace Prize-winner. He has been behind the bars for the last three years.

Bialiatski, founder of Viasna, the Belarusian human rights group, was arrested in July 2021 on tax evasion charges. But he was then convicted of smuggling and financing activities that violated public order. He was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.
