Thousands of people in France on Saturday protested against President Macron’s choice of prime minister. They accused Macron of stealing the election and undermining the popular sentiments.

The French president had appointed centre-right politician Michel Barnier as the prime minister, but the left parties accused Macron of ignoring election outcome. The elections had thrown a hung parliament and it took months for Macron to finally take a decision on who to be the appointed as the prime minister.

Barnier, 73, is a conservative leader and was a Brexit negotiator for the European Union. Jean-Luc Melenchon, head of the far-left France Unbowed party (LFI), told protesters at the march in Paris: "I call on you to undertake a long battle", according to news organisations.
