In the midst of an awaited judgment of the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court on the impeachment of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korean Opposition has on Friday brought a motion for the impeachment of Acting President Choi Sang-mok. The move of the Opposition is likely to deepen the political crisis in the tech-intensive nation of East Asia, an ally of the United States.

South Korea has been collaborating on several fronts, including research on battery for electronic vehicles, with United States of America.

Choi, who also holds the Finance Portfolio, has been leading the country after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached in December over a short-lived martial law. Impeachment of a president in South Korea requires a voting in the parliament with a simple majority.

The acting president is reportedly in conflict with the Opposition over his manner of handling of important issues of the country. The Opposition has a good base in the parliament and reportedly wants an early election in the country.
