Rape and murder of a lady doctor in India Medical professionals protest, keep away from healthcare

Doctors in India kept away from health services, except for emergencies, staging a 24-hour protest on Saturday over the rape and murder of a lady colleague in a medical college and hospital in Kolkata, India. Hospitals and clinics remained shut.

Newspapers in India reported that more than one million doctors joined the strike in various cities across the country, paralysing medical services. The government met the representatives of the medical associations, and urged the doctors to return to their duties.
