Several cultural experts and archaeologists have petitioned the United Nations to protect Lebanon’s heritage in the war-torn region, news organisations have reported on Monday.
The Israeli strikes in the past weeks have reportedly been destroying world heritage sites, including ancient Roman ruins which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The petition, signed by 300 prominent cultural figures, was sent to UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay to protect the heritage sites by declaring them as “no target zones” in wars, news reports said.
