A Peruvian farmer, Saul Luciano Lliuya, has taken a German energy firm, RWE, the court of law citing that the emission from the firm’s operation has contributed to the cause for melting of Andean glaciers.

Hearing of the case begins from Monday. As this is going to be a landmark legal battle over farmers and the firms, international eyes are on it as the judgment of the court will prove decisive in the way emissions are viewed vis-à-vis climate change.

The Higher Regional Court of Hamm is where the hearing of the case is taking place. The farmer also has sued the firm with 21,000 euros.

According to reports, the glaciers in Andes is melting and a lake above the hometown of Saul Luciano Lliuya is swelling to a dangerous proportion with a possible flooding in the coming days.

The Andes Mountains, also known as Andean Mountain Range are the longest continental mountain range in the world that form a continuous highland on the western edge of South America.

Saul Luciano Lliuya, the Peruvian farmer who has taken the German energy firm to the court, lives in a hilly region near Huaraz, Peru. He grows corn and potatoes.

Huaraz is located in the north Peruvian Andes, at the foot of the Cordillera Blanca Mountain range, which is part of the larger Andes range.

If the Peruvian farmer wins, the case will set a precedence for polluting companies in future.
