Prevost had been made a bishop, Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru by Pope Francis in 2014. In 2023, Bishop Prevost became an archbishop and with a few months, Pope Francis elevated him to the post of Cardinal.

Soon afterwards, the new pope appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica waving at the gathering.
