The M-23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, have reportedly taken over the Congo city of Goma, located on the east of the African country. Thousands of residents have fled their homes in the violent exercise of the rebels.

Goma is the eastern Congo’s largest city, and situated in the midst of a very rich mineral resource-region.

The African countries, including Congo, have been a place of mineral interest for several nations including China and the European Union nations. Due to the presence of rich minerals, ethnic clashes covertly backed by nations with trade interests, are all too common.

Now that the M-23 rebel group has taken over Congo city of Goma, there is a risk of spill-over of the war across the region, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned.
