An Israeli air strike on a school building in Gaza City, used as a shelter by displaced Palestinians, has killed more than 100 people, according to the head of al-Ahli Hospital, Fadl Naeem. The remains of many others are reportedly unidentifiable due to the severity of their injuries.
The Israeli military claimed that the al-Taba’een school served as a Hamas and Islamic Jihad military facility, which Hamas denies. The strike, which occurred during dawn prayers, has drawn criticism from Western and regional powers, accusing Israel of showing little interest in ending the Gaza conflict.
The UN reports that 477 out of 564 school buildings in Gaza have been hit or damaged as of 6 July, with over a dozen shelters targeted since then. Jaafar Taha, a nearby resident, described the aftermath as "horrific," with screams for help and bodies dismembered. UNICEF spokesman Salim Oweis called the attack "outrageous," highlighting that schools, mosques, and hospital yards are densely packed with civilians seeking refuge.
