India landslide death toll reach 290

The death toll due to landslide in India’s Kerala, has risen to over 290, many victims are missing. Extremely heavy rains had hit hilly areas of Wayanad in Kerala resulting in massive landslides a couple of days back.

While Indian prime minister has announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 as compensation for the injured, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the landslide-hit areas and termed it as a ‘national disaster’. Gandhi in the recent parliamentary election had won from Wayanad, but vacated the seat after he decided to keep Rae Bareili constituency.
