Hamas leader Ismail Haniyen was killed by a short-range projectile with a warhead of about seven kg, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has said. The killing took place when Haniyen was in his house in Tehran.

Wednesday's assassination has evoked fears of direct conflict between Tehran and its old enemy Israel, which would invariably involve many other countries including the US. Iran has vowed to avenge the killing and there even is an order to strike Israel. Revenge for the killing of the Hamas leader will be "severe and at an appropriate time, place, and manner," the Guards' statement said.
