German Chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz has on Sunday said that he will talk with France and Britain for sharing their nuclear weapons. However, this possible sharing will not be as a substitute of U.S. nuclear arms that the U.S. offers for protection of Europe as per the long-standing U.S.-Europe coalition.

Europe has been in constant worry of Russian aggression and Germany being the largest economy in Europe minus nuclear weapons, is always a concern. Other two big nations of Europe—Britain and France have nuclear weapons. Thus, in case of a situation where Russia may want to disturb Europe, Russia is likely to avoid the two nations with nuclear capacity and choose Germany to direct its aggression.

Germany, due to its gory past in the Second World War, is bound by a non-nuclear defence in international treaties. However, it can share nuclear weapons with its allies—a gap Merz wants to make good use.

Also, the reason why Merz is thinking in this line, is that Europe no longer can afford to fully rely on the U.S. to come to its support in case of a Russian aggression, particularly in the changing geopolitical scenario post federal elections in the United States.
