France’s government is likely to collapse this week after far-right and left-wing parties filed no-confidence motions against Prime Minister Michel Barnier on Monday. National Rally leader Marine Le Pen and France Unbowed’s Mathilde Panot accused Barnier’s administration of deepening political chaos and undermining democracy.
The motions, driven by Barnier’s attempt to push a social security bill through parliament without a vote, are expected to pass on Wednesday, marking the first French government ousted by no-confidence since 1962. Investors responded with a sell-off, widening French bond spreads and weakening the euro.
Barnier’s minority government had relied on Le Pen’s support but lost it over disagreements on a budget bill proposing €60 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts. While both sides blame each other for failed negotiations, Barnier warned lawmakers against putting personal interests over France’s future.
If the government collapses, President Emmanuel Macron may appoint a caretaker government or technocratic administration while searching for a new prime minister. With no new elections possible before July, the budget remains in limbo, risking constitutional and legal challenges if not passed by December 20.
The crisis deepens France’s political instability, raising concerns across Europe amid Germany’s election season and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office.
