Former German Chancellor Merkel Recalls Trump as a “Curious” Man

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that she felt “sorrow”at Donald Trump’s return to power and that Trump “is a challenge for the world, particularly for multilateralism,”news organisations have reported.

Quoting Merkel, who served as the German Chancellor for 16 years, and saw the full four years of the last stint of Trump as the President of the United States, from her statement to German weekly Der Spiegel published Friday, news organisations reported her as recalling, “that every meeting with him was “a competition: you or me.””

Merkel also recalled her experience with Trump as Trump as “very curious and wanted details — but only to read them for his own advantage, to find arguments that strengthen him and weaken others.”

Germany is one of Europe’s strongest economies and the U.S. being the strongest in the world, outcome of the presidential election in the U.S. has a direct bearing in Germany. Slogans like “America First” and “make America Great Again” reportedly has impacted German politics and the coalition government of present Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the Social Democratic Party, has fallen, and Germany is going for election in February next year.
