The European Union (EU)-China trade competition reached a crucial juncture after China asked France to push EU towards a mutually acceptable solution on electronic vehicle industry, news organisations have reported.
The EU had imposed a huge tariff, upto 45%, on Chinese electronic vehicles, responding to which China imposed heavy duty on European brandy.
French junior minister for trade, Sophie Primas was in Shanghai on a three-day visit on Sunday, in order to work out a solution on Chinese duties on brandy. She held a meeting with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, who asked Paris to play "an active role" to convince the EU on Chinese EVs.
France thinks Chinese duties on its brandy a political issue and unjustified. China on the other hand holds EU’s tariff on its EVs, a decision taken in a rush.
