Taiwan is at the centre of conflict between China and the U.S. amidst presidential election in the U.S. after China on Wednesday felt that if U.S. Republican candidate Donald Trump won the election, Taiwan may be “discarded”, news organisations have reported.

In the campaign trail, Trump has referred to Taiwan issue between China and Taiwan, saying that Taiwan will have to pay to be protected, and that, if he wins, the U.S. will impose sanctions on China, the moment China decides to “go into Taiwan”.

The U.S. is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself. In recent days, China has been claiming Taiwan as part of its territory, and Taiwan has been saying it is sovereign and China cannot represent it.

“Whether the United States is trying to protect or harm Taiwan, I believe most of our Taiwan compatriots have already made a rational judgement and know very clearly that what the United States pursues is always 'America First'," news organisations said, quoting Zhu Fenglian, Chinese diplomat in China's Taiwan Affairs Office.
