Congo’s rebel group, M23, have been making rapid advance towards the city of Goma, in the eastern region of Democratic Republic of Congo, and are near to take over the city, according to latest reports.

As a consequence of the rapid progress of the rebels, civilians are deserting their homes and fleeing to save their lives. Reports suggest that in the last two weeks, more than 178,000 people have been displaced in the insurgency.

The advance of the rebels is crucial as the eastern region of Congo is mineral rich and capturing the region will enhance the power of the rebels.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, an armed conflict broke out in north Kivu between the armed members of March 23 Movement (M23) and the government forces between April 2012-November 2013. This time, the rebel forces have become active again. The rebels have taken over towns like Minova, Katale and Masisi. They have now reached Goma, an important city in Congo.

In recent times, as trade competition grows between nations in the developed worlds, who have their interest in Africa, arm conflict between tribal groups has seen phenomenal increase.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres have sounded alarmed over the M23 group advancing towards eastern Congo, saying that there is a risk of a broader regional war in Congo, and large-scale displacement.
